Speaker B:Sam.
Speaker A:Foreign okay, so first I'm going to tell you about the Guy family and then I'll tell you the story of these murders.
Speaker A:Joel Guy Senior was a pipeline engineering designer and Lisa Guy was an accounts payable administrator.
Speaker A:They had been married for 31 years and were said to be true soulmates.
Speaker A:They both had a great sense of humor, were loving and kind hearted and compassionate people.
Speaker A:They enjoyed being outdoors in nature.
Speaker A:Joel Sr. Had three daughters from a previous marriage.
Speaker A:One of his daughters describes him as a great storyteller.
Speaker A:Lisa was said to be one of the most loving, caring and forgiving people on this earth.
Speaker A:She would give the shirt off her back to anyone.
Speaker A:Most of her paycheck went towards supporting Joel Jr.
Speaker A:Financially.
Speaker A:She covered his education, tuition and living expenses.
Speaker A:Joel Sr. Had lost his job.
Speaker A:So instead of re entering the workforce, the couple had decided to retire, sell their Knoxville home and move back to Sir Goinsville, Tennessee where Joel Sr. Was originally from.
Speaker A:Joel Guy Jr. Who is now 37 years old, is currently incarcerated at the Northwest Correctional complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee.
Speaker A: He was born in: Speaker A:He is also from Sir Gainesville.
Speaker A:His family members who did not know him well called him Joel Michael.
Speaker A:To distinguish him easily from his father.
Speaker A:I will be referring to him as Joel Jr. His half sisters described him as reclusive.
Speaker A: stic surgery, but withdrew in: Speaker A:He spent nine years in different colleges without graduating, all which had been financed by his parents.
Speaker A:By the time he was 28, he still had never even had a job.
Speaker A:He had lived off of his parents his whole adult life, all the way until their deaths.
Speaker A:Joel Jr. S roommate had described him as socially awkward and said he would stay in his room for days at a time and that he really didn't have any friends.
Speaker A:When Joel Sr. Lost his job, he and his wife, Lisa, decided to cut Joel Jr. Off, meaning no more financial support for him.
Speaker A:It was time for him to finally take care of himself.
Speaker A:Little did they know Joel Senior and Lisa were hosting their last Thanksgiving meal, which included Joel Jr. And their three daughters.
Speaker A:The celebratory feast had went off without a hitch, and after all three daughters each returned to their individual lives.
Speaker A:Meanwhile, Joel Jr. Had already been plotting out the murders of his parents for several weeks and had it all written in a shocking notebook, which I'll tell you more about a little later.
Speaker A:He continued to stay at his parents home after his sisters had left.
Speaker A:While his mother had went out shopping, he had went upstairs to the exercise room to stab his father to death.
Speaker A:The blade had pierced his lungs, liver, kidneys and broke several ribs.
Speaker A:Unknowingly, now a widow, Lisa returned home to be similarly ambushed and nine of her ribs had been severed by her own son.
Speaker A:After trying to reach Lisa repeatedly by phone, a co worker who had been concerned called the police to request a welfare check, saying it was highly unusual for Lisa to miss work without notice.
Speaker A:After some time had passed, the co worker was still unable to contact Lisa and again had called the police to ask what they had found.
Speaker A:During the welfare check, the police told her that everything seemed fine and nothing looked out of place.
Speaker A:The co worker asked the police to return to the home and check again because she knew something wasn't right.
Speaker A:Lisa had plans for a retirement lunch with several co workers and she would have not canceled.
Speaker A:During the first visit to the home, the Knox county patrol officer who was sent out for the welfare check knocked and rang the doorbel but received no response.
Speaker A:He then walked around to the side of the house where there was a small fence that surrounded the backyard with a locked gate.
Speaker A:He saw a doghouse and whistled for the dog, but there was no response.
Speaker A:He then returned to the front door to knock on the door and ring the doorbell once again, but still received no response.
Speaker A:The second welfare check consisted of one Detective and three officers, one of which performed the first check.
Speaker A:Upon arrival, the detective had noticed vehicles in the driveway and a for sale sign in the yard.
Speaker A:Despite the for sale sign in the yard, there was no realtor box on the front door, which was unusual.
Speaker A:There were groceries visible in the front foyer of the home.
Speaker A:After speaking to some of the neighbors, the detective believed the victims were inside the home and needed immediate assistance.
Speaker A:The detective jumped over the fence into the backyard where the back door knob was missing and the glass was warm from the inside of the house.
Speaker A:He also noticed a strange odor that he described as chemical in nature.
Speaker A:He then called the realtor and confirmed that there should be a lockbox on the front door.
Speaker A:At that point, he realized the front door knob did not match the deadbolt.
Speaker A:Someone had replaced the front door knob with a doorknob from the back door.
Speaker A:One of the officers had found a garage door opener in one of the vehicles in the driveway and used it to open the garage.
Speaker A:As soon as the garage door had opened, you could immediately feel a wave of heat.
Speaker A:It was at that point the detective decided to enter the home through an interior garage door to conduct a welfare check.
Speaker A:Now, once again, I'm going to give a fair warning.
Speaker A:The crime scene is pretty gruesome, so be advised.
Speaker A:The detective describing hit immediately upon entry with a strong odor and extreme heat.
Speaker A:As the detective and officers entered, they announced their presence.
Speaker A:They observed several bottles of chemicals on the floor.
Speaker A:There was a purse and wallets on the table, which alarmed the detective because most people take those things with them when they leave their residence.
Speaker A:The detective noticed a large stock pot on the kitchen stove.
Speaker A:Both the stove and oven were turned on.
Speaker A:He noticed what appeared to be feces on the living room floor.
Speaker A:He found perishable items within the groceries that were in the foyer floor.
Speaker A:There were long guns on the dining room table and none of it made sense to the detective.
Speaker A:The officers and the detective then moved up the staircase, noticing it was even hotter upstairs.
Speaker A:They could hear a dog barking as they went up the stairs.
Speaker A:They had noticed what appeared to be blood on the wall of the stairwell.
Speaker A:At the top of the stairwell were sharp instruments, a bucket, clothing and reddish brown staining on the floor and on the wall.
Speaker A:As the detective looked down the hall, he saw hands that weren't connected to a body.
Speaker A:He then entered the master bedroom where he saw a roll of plastic on the bed and items scattered on the floor.
Speaker A:As he entered the bathroom, he saw an array of tools and lights on the floor, knives and two tubs, which Appeared to have body parts liquefying.
Speaker A:The detective then returned to the kitchen and looked in the stock pot on the stove where he discovered the severed head of Ms. Lisa Guy.
Speaker A:That stock pot, I would personally assume had been used to cook their thanksgiving meal in a couple days earlier.
Speaker A:Now I'm going to play an audio clip from the body cam as the police discovered the crime scene.
Speaker B:They're saying.
Speaker B:Roger.
Speaker B:Police.
Speaker B:Police department.
Speaker B:Sheriff's office.
Speaker B:Looks like blood.
Speaker B:People's hands.
Speaker B:Yeah, I think so.
Speaker B:That's what I think.
Speaker B:Get out now.
Speaker B:We've not cleared this.
Speaker B:There's blood all over it, though.
Speaker B:You can't back out.
Speaker B:There's rock.
Speaker A:Same way we came in.
Speaker B:Don't touch nothing.
Speaker A:Joel Jr. Had purchased multiple chemicals to dissolve body parts and clean up the crime scene Teams had to use hazmat suits for their own safety.
Speaker A:There were gas cans and corrosive chemicals, Hydrogen peroxide and drain cleaner.
Speaker A:He had the thermostat turned up to 90 degrees in the home to attempt to destroy forensic evidence and speed up the decomposition of the bodies.
Speaker A:Prosecutors had referred to the scene as a diabolical stew of human remains.
Speaker A:There were several surveillance videos at stores like ace hardware, home depot, walmart, and academy sports of him purchasing chemicals, totes and a knife.
Speaker A:Joel Jr. Had multiple cuts on his hands from where his father fought back for his life.
Speaker A:There was even a overturned bowflex machine in the exercise room.
Speaker A:Well, Joel Jr. Had left the scene of the crime to go back to louisiana with plans to return to finish cleaning up with all the evidence left behind.
Speaker A:It didn't take long for police to identify him as the one and only suspect.
Speaker A:He was arrested in his apartment complex parking lot.
Speaker A:During his arrest, police had discovered a meat grinder in the trunk of his car.
Speaker A:Now, let's backtrack a little bit and talk about a piece of evidence that was found back at the crime scene.
Speaker A:In the upstairs bedroom where he had been staying was a backpack.
Speaker A:And within that backpack was a notebook that was a premeditated notebook of murder.
Speaker A:And within that notebook had the plans for this gruesome crime.
Speaker A:This is what was written in the notebook.

Speaker A:Wear gloves and socks to prevent fingerprints and footprints.
Speaker A:Drop something down the garbage disposal to break it.
Speaker A:Get him on the ground fixing it.
Speaker A:Kill him with the knife.
Speaker A:Clean up mess before she gets home.
Speaker A:Kill her with knife.
Speaker A:Now here's another part that he scratched out.
Speaker A:Killed log after this part was not scratched out.
Speaker A:Leave alive.
Speaker A:Take dog with you.
Speaker A:Place her in the shower.
Speaker A:Turn on hot water and point at her to get rid of forensics.
Speaker A:Remove her clothes and take them with me for disposal.

Speaker A:Leave through front door and wipe down doorknobs.
Speaker A:Timer for flammables set for Friday at 10am so they can't report it.
Speaker A:Another page of the notebook had the following handwritten notes.
Speaker A:Ultraviolet light shows fingerprints.
Speaker A:Check mail before leaving to get rid of blood.
Speaker A:Use peroxide and bleach.
Speaker A:Directly underneath was the word hemoglobin with an arrow pointing to peroxide and DNA with an Arrow pointing to bleach.
Speaker A:And on another page of the notebook were notes with the heading Destruction of bodies and listed the percentage of fat, protein, water and other compounds in the human body.
Speaker A:The last page of notes listed the victim's assets.
Speaker A:Her assets, her life insurance, $500,000, possibly more with indemnity.
Speaker A:With him missing, dead, I get the whole thing.
Speaker A:All her other assets are joint.
Speaker A:Go to him if missing, unknown if he is dead.

Speaker A:And here's some other evidence that was found.
Speaker A:A digital forensic examiner responded to the scene to collect a laptop that was found in an upstairs bedroom with an attached external hard drive.
Speaker A:The laptop was in the middle of the bed, unlocked and was running a Samsung app.
Speaker A:When the examiner hovered the mouse over that app, it displayed an email email linked to that app.
Speaker A:The laptop was also running BitLocker, which is a Microsoft security tool that keeps anyone that doesn't know a password to the BitLocker inscription from looking at the hard drive.
